I kid you not…..beautifully soft t-shirts and sweatshirts made from recycled plastic bottles!
I’m an ardent recycler. Drop into my studio or call on me for a cuppa at home and you’re likely to find at least one shopping bag filled with shopping bags, a box with bits of bubble wrap and a windowsill full of old jars turned into tea light holders… I can’t seem to live with the idea of throwing anything away that can technically find new life elsewhere. So, I stash like a seasoned hoarder, at least until I can rehome or have enough rubbish for a trip to our local recycling centre.
Same goes for my clothes, I love a splurge as much as the next person, but my clothes have to have some lasting power so anything I can’t “update” with a restyle is dropped off to a lovely lady called Heather (well to be honest I call her mum) who repurposes old textiles into childrenswear for her sustainable children’s brand Cornish Clobber. My last donation of old duvet covers now have a new lease of life as boys’ shirts and girls’ dresses….totally cool.
Whilst there will always be a market for the fast, cheap fashions that clog up our landfills it is becoming mercifully more common to find conscious business and manufacturing practices in the clothing industry. Vicky – business consultant and founder of Immerse believes;
“We are in a state of flux…systems have been serving the few but not the many and it’s time we study our perceptions and integrity and craft businesses made with empathy and values”.
After chatting with her it became so obvious that anything less for Sugar Reef just wouldn’t sit well with me and that is why every product we sell will have a transparent providence, from the raw materials to the manufacturing and packaging. Our materials will repurpose waste that is damaging this amazing world we live in, our manufacturing will have minimal impact on the environment it operates in and our suppliers will support ethically the communities they engage with.
For those to whom it matters (like me!), our t-shirts and sweatshirts are made from 100% recycled materials and are certified under the Global Recycle Standard (GRS) and have a 90% reduced carbon footprint so… There’s a LOT to like about them and I haven’t even gotten to how they feel (which is freakin’ awesome — unbelievably soft).
This might be one sweater that falls under both the splurge AND feel-good categories.
